FAMILY SERVICES
What is customary care? What does customary care mean for Aamjiwnaang First Nation?
Mnaasged Child and Family Services, of which the Aamjiwnaang First Nation Child Welfare Prevention Program will become a part, is to develop a joint overall approach to customary care. A discussion paper on customary care states that “First Nations people have said that customary care is about “our life” and our age-old tradition of supporting each other through extended family members and elders to care for our First Nations children.” The Child and Family Services Act 1984, states that the term customary care refers to the “care and supervision of an Indian or native child by a person who is not the child’s parent, according to the custom of the child’s band or native community.” Mnaasged Child and Family Services recognizes that customary care will be handled differently in each First Nation. Therefore, your input is needed into what customary care means to our community of Aamjiwnaang.
